Chicago indie-soul outfit The Sometimes Family will celebrate the release of their new EP, Fun With Heartbreak, with a headlining show at Double Door on Sunday, July 1 (tickets and more info here).
Fun With Heartbreak, which can be streamed on the group's BandCamp page, is six tracks of sweet, soulful pop with a serious jones for '60s/'70s AM radio and pretty vocal harmonies. The music is almost purposefully "twee" and rough around the edges, a far cry from the more polished diva soul of local luminaries JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound, The Congregation and The Right Now.
Standout cut (and free download) "It's Slow But It Feels Alright" approaches sexy without compromising the band's wholesome mod/geek aesthetic, while the organ-driven "If It's Love" flirts with slow-burn blues and torch song jazz.
