Sarah Marie Young-Too Many Februaries

Chicago (by way of Indianapolis) soul/pop/jazz singer Sarah Marie Young celebrated the release of her debut CD, Too Many Februaries, with a show at Schuba’s Tavern on Wednesday, July 31. She was able to make the album after winning the 2011 Shure Montreux Voice Competition (as judged by Quincy Jones) at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Too Many Februaries, recorded at Balik Farm Studios in Toggenberg, Switzerland, practically floats out of the speakers via the opening track, "Too Late to Say Goodbye," which evokes The Beatles at their most delicate and beautiful.

Elsewhere, the title track is old school soul music in the vein of Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack; "Get It" is sassy funk with some fine scatting; the Bernstein/Sondheim classic "Somewhere" gets a nice, jazzy treatment; closing track "You're All I Need to Get By" is truly inspirational.
